CEM-U000111 - High Speed CAN Communication Bus. General Electrical Failures. Circuit short to ground
System

Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
7 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
One of the high speed CAN wires is shorted to earth, which disturbs communication between the control modules. The engine may then have trouble starting, performance and throttle response can suffer, and the gauges may read wrongly. The fault most often lies in the high speed network wiring.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between one of the CAN wires and earth
What you can do
- 1Note when the faults occur, for example at start, under acceleration or at steady speed. This gives a clue to where the cable is damaged
- 2Check that the high speed network harness is not chafed, pinched or worn against the body
- 3Check the connectors in the high speed network for loose connections, corrosion and moisture
- 4With a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes from all control modules and start with those for the CAN network
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no contact with earth or the body along their length
- 6If the engine stalls while driving, avoid long journeys and have a workshop trace the fault promptly
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine does not start
- Poor performance and lack of power, especially at take-off
- The throttle response hesitates, surges or is jerky
- Cruise control cannot be engaged
- The speedometer and tachometer show wrong readings or do not work
What the fault can affect1
- The affected module stays switched off until its power supply is cut
