What does this fault code mean?

One of the high speed CAN wires has contact with battery voltage, which disturbs communication between the control modules. The engine may then have trouble starting, and driving and the gauges are affected. The fault most often lies in the high speed network wiring.

    Possible causes

    • Short circuit between one of the CAN wires and supply voltage

    What you can do

    1. 1Note which driving faults occur, for example at start, acceleration or steady speed. This shows which parts of the harness may be damaged
    2. 2Check that the high speed harness is not chafed, pinched or damaged by moisture
    3. 3Check the high speed network connectors for loose connections and corrosion
    4. 4With a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes from all control modules and start with those for the CAN network
    5. 5Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no contact with battery voltage when they should not
    6. 6An engine that will not start or stalls while driving is a safety problem. Have a workshop trace the fault promptly

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The engine does not start even though the starter turns
    • Poor performance and lack of power
    • The throttle response hesitates, surges or is jerky
    • Cruise control cannot be engaged
    • The speedometer and tachometer show wrong readings

    What the fault can affect1

    • The module stays switched off until its power supply is cut

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
