Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault code means that the control module storing the fault has lost, or has disrupted, its link to the engine control module (ECM). The fault concerns the CAN network and not one individual control module. It can show up as the engine starting poorly, stalling or lacking power.
Possible causes
- No power reaches the engine control module (ECM)
- Broken ground wire between the ECM and the car body
- Poor contact in the connections to the ECM
- Open or shorted CAN wiring
- An ECM not intended for the car, such as a used module with other software or hardware
- A common fault in the CAN network, if several communication faults with other modules are also stored
What you can do
- 1Check the ECM fuse in the engine bay fusebox. If it is blown, look for a short to ground before fitting a new one
- 2Check the ECM ground wire to the car body for breaks, and the ground point for loose contact or oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to confirm the ECM supply voltage matches battery voltage, and look for loose or corroded connectors
- 4With a diagnostic tool, try to read the ECM ID number. If it reads, communication works at that moment and the fault may be hard to find
- 5If no cause is found or the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the CAN network. Replace the CEM only if it is damaged
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine does not start or does not turn over
- Engine stalls
- Engine lacks power or feels sluggish
- Engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly while driving
- Check engine lamp comes on or a message appears in the display
