VOLVO
CPM-5201 - Control module. Over heated
System

Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The CPM has logged too wide a gap in temperature between the overheat thermostat and the temperature sensor. The heater is then deactivated and the code is set. The cause may be a damaged thermostat, sensor or water pump, or air or a leak in the cooling system.
Possible causes
- Damaged overheat protection thermostat
- Damaged engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
- Air or leakage in the cooling system
- Damaged water pump
What you can do
- 1If any of CPM-5001, CPM-5101, CPM-3202 or CPM-3002 is also set, fix those first and then see whether this code returns
- 2Check the coolant hoses for damage and leaks
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the water pump and listen for a buzzing sound; if there is none, the pump is suspect
- 4Clear the code and start the heater again to see whether it comes back
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop measure the resistance of the thermostat and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Poor heating in the passenger compartment
- The parking heater does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The heater is deactivated when the code is set
- If the heater is activated again, it makes a new start attempt
