Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The heater control module has internal software that does not suit the car, because its configuration does not match the one the central electronic module sends out on the CAN network. The control module can then only respond to diagnostic commands and is disconnected from the network. The heater's function is blocked.
Possible causes
- Incorrect configuration parameter in the control module
- The control module is not intended for the car, for example a used control module with other software or hardware
- Open circuit in the CAN wiring to the central electronic module
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check that the connectors and CAN wiring to the heater are intact, with no chafing or corrosion.
- 2If the fault is intermittent, erase the fault code and check whether it returns. If it does, the fault is probably temporary, and the wiring is the first thing to look at.
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault codes in the central electronic module. Faults there can affect the heater's communication.
- 4If the control module has been replaced or is used, have a workshop download the correct software and configure it for the car.
- 5Have a workshop measure the CAN wiring with diagnostic equipment. Do not replace the central electronic module until fault tracing is complete.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Poor heating in the cabin
- The parking heater does not work
What the fault can affect3
- The control module disconnects itself from the CAN network (bus-off)
- The heater's function is blocked
- The control module only responds to diagnostic commands and not to normal CAN communication
