Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
This code means the charging system has let the voltage drop in a way the control module does not accept, while the engine runs without any energy being converted. It is a general fault message with no specific fault type, and it is a knock-on fault from a fault in another control module on the car. The code can sometimes be set when nothing is wrong with the vehicle.
Possible causes
- Knock-on fault from a fault in the DC/DC converter module (DCDC)
- Knock-on fault from a fault in the battery energy control module (BECM)
- Knock-on fault from a fault in the inverter generator module (IGM)
- Knock-on fault from a fault in the engine control module (ECM)
- Knock-on fault from a fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the other control modules and deal with the root fault first, as this code is then a knock-on fault
- 2Start the car and let the engine run for a while. Clear the fault code and see whether it returns
- 3Check that the 12-volt battery is charged and that its terminals are tight
- 4As the fault may involve the high voltage system, work on the system must only be carried out by a workshop with trained staff
Symptoms you may notice1
- The charging warning lights up or behaves abnormally
