System
Differential Electronic Module (DEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
1 modelXC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) compares its configuration with the one that applies to the car, and the vehicle configuration information comes from the central electronic control module (CEM). The code is stored when the two do not match. The fault may lie in the software downloaded into the DEM, but it may also have its cause in the CEM. Troubleshooting therefore starts by checking which module deviates.
Possible causes
- Incorrect software downloaded into the four-wheel drive control module (DEM)
- The cause may lie in the central electronic control module (CEM)
What you can do
- 1Read and erase the code, then road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the codes stored in the CEM and note whether any of them are stored together with this one
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the software in the DEM and in the CEM and update it if needed
Symptoms you may notice1
- The four-wheel drive does not work
