What does this fault code mean?
The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) sends and receives information on the CAN network. When a serious disturbance blocks communication, the module cannot be communicated with and the code is stored. The fault may lie in a short-circuited or broken CAN wire, in the module itself or in another module on the same part of the network. The code can only be read out if the fault is intermittent.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in all control modules, and check whether codes for lost communication are stored in the central electronic control module (CEM); troubleshoot from those first
- 2Check that the battery connections are secure and clean and that the fuses are intact
- 3Use a multimeter to check whether any CAN wire touches ground or battery voltage, with the battery negative terminal disconnected
- 4Check the connectors and wiring in the CAN network for chafing, pinching, moisture and loose contacts
- 5If the fault only shows now and then, gently shake the wiring and connectors with the ignition on and see whether the communication fault appears
- 6If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment find out which module disturbs the network before any module is replaced
Symptoms you may notice4
- The four-wheel drive does not work
- Message in the text display, which does not apply to all models
- The traction control warning lamp lights
- The general warning lamp lights
What the fault can affect1
- The control module shuts down and stays off until the supply voltage is broken; at the next start it tries to communicate again
