What does this fault code mean?
The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) has a temperature sensor on its circuit board. The code is stored when the signal from the sensor falls outside what is normal, which can be caused by a signal wire shorted to ground. The four-wheel drive is then disengaged to protect the gearbox. The fault may lie in the connectors, the wiring or the control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connectors
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged temperature sensor in the control module
- Damaged four-wheel drive control module (DEM)
What you can do
- 1Read and erase the code, then road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connectors to the four-wheel drive control module for oxidation and loose contacts
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the control module has no contact with ground (the body) when the wire is disconnected
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and replace the four-wheel drive control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The four-wheel drive does not work
- Warning symbol and message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The four-wheel drive is disengaged
