What does this fault code mean?
This is an event-driven fault code, meaning it is an information message and not a fault in the control module. The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) compares the wheel speeds, and when a wheel on the front or rear axle turns faster than the others on a straight road at steady throttle, this is read as the tyres differing. The cause may be unevenly worn tyres, a tyre of the wrong size or a puncture. The four-wheel drive then works with reduced function.
Possible causes
- Unevenly worn tyres, front compared with rear
- A tyre of the wrong size fitted to the front or rear axle compared with the others
- Puncture in one or more tyres
What you can do
- 1Check that all four tyres are the same size and equally worn front and rear
- 2Check that no tyre is punctured or has too low a pressure
- 3If the tyres differ, that is probably the cause: correct it by fitting matching tyres, then erase the code
- 4If the fault remains after that, have a workshop check the tyres and the four-wheel drive
Symptoms you may notice2
- Jerking or jolting can be felt when driving straight on at steady throttle, especially on a slight downhill
- The four-wheel drive does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The four-wheel drive works with reduced function
- On heavy wheelspin the four-wheel drive still engages, even while the code is set
