What does this fault code mean?
The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) communicates with other control modules over the vehicle's high-speed CAN network. The code is set when communication on the network is disturbed, either by another control module sending faulty messages or by the DEM's own messages. Because the module cannot communicate during a serious communication fault, the code can only be read out while the fault is intermittent.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes, note them and clear them. Test drive the vehicle to see if the code returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is in good condition
- 3Follow the CAN wiring from the diagnostic socket to the control modules for chafing and pinched areas, and check the connectors
- 4Use a multimeter to confirm the wires have no contact with ground (body) or voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check which control modules respond on the CAN network and note whether any are missing
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop carry out a CAN fault-finding procedure, as it requires measurements in the wiring
Symptoms you may notice4
- Four-wheel drive does not work
- Message in the display
- The anti-spin warning lamp is lit
- General warning lamp lit
What the fault can affect2
- The control module switches itself off and stays off until the power supply to it has been broken
- At the next power-on the control module tries to communicate again
