What does this fault code mean?

The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) checks its own configuration ID against the signal setup that the central electronic module (CEM) sends out on the CAN network. If the IDs do not match, or if communication between the two has been interrupted, the code is set. The fault may occur if the module was not built for this vehicle, for example a used module with other software, or because of a break in the CAN wiring.

    Possible causes

    • Incorrect CAN configuration ID, as the module was not built for this vehicle, for example a used module with other software or hardware
    • Open circuit in the CAN wiring running to the central electronic module (CEM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Read off the fault codes, note them and clear them. Test drive the vehicle to see if the code returns
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is in good condition
    3. 3Follow the CAN wiring running to the central electronic module for chafing, pinched areas and loose connectors
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, check that the control module responds to diagnostic commands, even though it is not communicating normally
    5. 5If parts have been changed or the control module was recently replaced, tell the workshop, since a new control module needs the right software for the vehicle
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the configuration and program the control module with the correct software, or replace it if it is wrong

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • Four-wheel drive does not work
    • Message in the display
    • The anti-spin warning lamp is lit
    • General warning lamp lit

    What the fault can affect1

    • The control module switches itself off and does not communicate normally on the CAN network, but it still responds to diagnostic commands

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
