Differential Electronic Module (DEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
8 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The four-wheel drive control module (DEM) receives a message from the engine control module (ECM) that the information it sends is incorrect. The code is event-controlled, meaning it is information that something has occurred rather than a fault in the DEM. It is a follow-on code: the root fault lies in the engine control module and should be remedied first, after which this code can be cleared. Four-wheel drive then works with reduced function.
Possible causes
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM), which sends out invalid information
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes in the engine control module and in the central electronic module (CEM) and remedy them first, since this code is a follow-on fault
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine data in live data with the engine running and check that the engine speed is displayed steadily
- 3Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is in good condition
- 4Clear this code only once the root fault in the engine control module has been remedied, then test drive the vehicle
- 5If the fault remains after the root fault has been remedied, have a workshop investigate the engine control module and the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice1
- Four-wheel drive does not work
What the fault can affect1
- Four-wheel drive has reduced function
