Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC70 Cabriolet (1998–2005), C70 Coupé (1998–2002), S70 (1997–2000), V70 (1997–2000), V70 XC (1998–2000)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine temperature gauge in the instrument receives an incorrect signal, so it shows a temperature that is too low or does not work at all. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but does not always show. The signal comes via the engine control module, so both the wiring to the instrument and the engine control module may be the cause.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground or voltage
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM)
- Fault in the driver information module (DIM)
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, note it and clear it. Test drive the vehicle to see if the fault returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Follow the signal wire between the engine and the instrument for chafing, pinched areas and loose connectors
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine temperature in live data when the engine is warm and check that the value rises steadily
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the engine control module and the instrument panel
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine temperature gauge does not work
- Engine temperature displayed too low
