Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC70 Cabriolet (1998–2005), C70 Coupé (1998–2002), S70 (1997–2000), V70 (1997–2000), V70 XC (1998–2000)
What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a high signal, it concerns a vehicle speed signal that is shorted to ground. The signal runs from the instrument to the engine control module and on to other receivers, such as the cruise control, the audio system and the climate system. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but does not always show.
Possible causes
- Vehicle speed signal wire shorted to ground between the instrument panel and the engine control module
- Short to ground in the wire to the cruise control, the audio system or the climate system
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, note it and clear it. Test drive the vehicle to see if the fault returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Follow the vehicle speed wire from the instrument panel for chafing and pinched areas, and use a multimeter to confirm it has no contact with ground (body)
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the vehicle speed in live data while driving and check that it follows the speedometer
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop trace the speed signal, which also runs over the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice2
- Cruise control does not work at all
- Audio automatic volume control does not work
