Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC70 Cabriolet (1998–2005), C70 Coupé (1998–2002), S70 (1997–2000), V70 (1997–2000), V70 XC (1998–2000)
What does this fault code mean?
The driver information module (DIM) receives no charging signal from the generator when the engine runs at higher revs. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but does not always show. The cause may be a break in the signal wire from the generator, or the wire being shorted to ground.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire from the generator
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Poor contact in the generator or instrument connector
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, note it and clear it. Test drive the vehicle to see if the fault returns
- 2Check that the battery terminals are clean and tightly fastened
- 3Check the connectors at the generator and at the instrument for oxidation and loose fit
- 4Follow the signal wire from the generator for chafing and damage, and use a multimeter to confirm it has no contact with ground (body)
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the charging signal is present with the engine running and disappears when it stops
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the generator and the signal wire
Symptoms you may notice1
- The generator warning lamp lights with the engine running
