What does this fault code mean?

The instrument's control module has not been able to communicate with the other control modules for a longer period, and the code is then set. It is an internal communication fault that can be caused by connector problems or by CAN wires that have been broken or shorted. No functions work when this happens.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance in the control module connections
    • Open circuit in the CAN signal wires
    • CAN signal wires shorted to ground, voltage or each other

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    2. 2Check the connectors at the instrument, the engine control module and the throttle unit for oxidation and loose fit
    3. 3Follow the CAN wiring for chafing and damage, and check whether any connector is loose
    4. 4Clear the fault code and switch the ignition off and on. If the fault returns, have a workshop investigate the communication

    Symptoms you may notice1

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
