What does this fault code mean?
The instrument cannot communicate with the other control modules on the CAN network, because a serious disturbance blocks the communication. The code is set by that disturbance. The fault may lie in a wire in the network, in the instrument, or in another control module on the same part of the network.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the instrument
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes in the other control modules first and note them; they may show where the fault is
- 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Check the connectors at the instrument and at the control modules on the network for oxidation and loose fit
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, check which control modules respond on the CAN network and note whether any are missing
- 5The ABS lamp is lit, and ABS is a safety function: have a workshop check the braking system before driving longer distances
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop carry out a CAN fault-finding procedure with measurements in the wiring
Symptoms you may notice5
- No gauges work
- The instrument lighting does not work
- The ABS warning lamp is lit
- The anti-spin lamp is lit
- The general red warning lamp is lit
What the fault can affect2
- The instrument switches itself off until the power supply to it has been broken
- No speed display, because the signal to the instrument is missing
