What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named a programming fault, it concerns disturbances on the high-speed CAN network (HS-CAN). The code is set when communication on the network is disturbed by another control module, or when the instrument's own messages cause disturbance. The instrument lighting and dimmer then stop working.
Possible causes
- Incorrect configuration
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Disturbance from another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Damaged instrument panel module (DIM)
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes in the other control modules first and remedy them; they may show where the disturbance comes from
- 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Follow the CAN wiring for chafing and pinched areas, and check the connectors for oxidation and loose fit
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read which control modules respond on the CAN network and note whether any are missing
- 5Clear the fault code and test drive the vehicle. If the fault returns, have a workshop carry out a CAN fault-finding procedure and check the configuration
Symptoms you may notice1
- The instrument lighting and dimmer do not work
What the fault can affect2
- The instrument switches itself off and stays off until the power supply to it has been broken
- At the next power-on the instrument tries to communicate again
