System
Driver Information Module (DIM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The instrument cluster (DIM) has lost contact with the engine control module (ECM) on the CAN network, or the engine control module does not respond at all. The fault is general and does not point to a single component or fault type.
Possible causes
- No power supply to the engine control module, often a blown fuse or a break in the supply
- Open circuit in the earth wire from the engine control module
- Poor contact or corrosion in the connections
- The engine control module does not suit the car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- Common fault on the CAN network, if other modules also have stored communication faults
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault codes in the instrument cluster and the engine control module, clear them and road test the car to see whether the fault returns
- 2Check the engine control module fuse. If it has blown, look for a short to earth in the circuit after it before replacing it
- 3Check that the earth point of the engine control module is tight and free from corrosion, and that the earth wire is not broken
- 4Measure with a multimeter that the supply to the engine control module is close to battery voltage with the ignition on
- 5Do not replace the engine control module until a workshop with diagnostic equipment has shown it is faulty, as the fault often lies in the wiring
Symptoms you may notice3
- The check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- A warning lamp or audible signal does not work as it should
- One or more gauges in the instrument cluster show faults or do not work
