What does this fault code mean?
The instrument cluster (DIM) gets no reply from the brake control module (BCM), which in this car handles the ABS function. The cluster therefore cannot show the ABS status, and the warning message about the brake system may be incomplete.
Possible causes
- The brake control module (BCM) is not working
- Break in the communication wire between the instrument cluster and the brake control module
- The communication wire is shorted to earth
- The communication wire is shorted to supply voltage
- Poor contact, oxidation or breaks in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault codes in the instrument cluster and the brake control module, clear them and road test the car to see whether the fault returns
- 2Check the fuses for the instrument cluster and the brake system in the fuse box
- 3Check that the connectors to the instrument cluster and to the brake control module are fully engaged and not corroded
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, try reading the brake control module. If it does not respond at all, the communication is broken
- 5Do not work on the brake system yourself. ABS is switched off until the fault is repaired; the brakes still work, but drive carefully and have a workshop repair the fault promptly
Symptoms you may notice2
- The ABS lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- A text message and a warning symbol appear in the instrument cluster
