What does this fault code mean?

The instrument cluster (DIM) receives signals from the central electronic module (CEM) with a lower quality than it accepts, so gauges and functions in the instrument cluster may show faults. The code is a secondary fault, usually caused by some other fault in the car.

    Possible causes

    • Tyres of the wrong size have been fitted to the front or rear axle compared with the other tyres
    • Fault in the central electronic module (CEM), which sends signals of too low quality
    • Fault in the fuel tank level sensor
    • Fault in the temperature sensor in the left outside mirror
    • Fault in the gear selector position sensor
    • A sensor linked to the engine control module (ECM) is faulty

    What you can do

    1. 1Compare the rolling circumference of all four tyres. Tyres of a different size can give wrong values
    2. 2This is a secondary fault, so look for the root fault first in the module that sends the signal
    3. 3Read all fault codes, especially those from the central electronic module, and fix the root fault before clearing this code
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the fuel level in live data with the fuel gauge while the tank is being filled and check that the values follow each other
    5. 5Check the fuses in the fuse box. Their location is in the owner's manual or the fuse list
    6. 6The code can only be cleared once the root fault is fixed. Then road test the car and check that the gauges show sensible values

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The speedometer shows a fault or does not work
    • The fuel gauge shows too high or too low a value
    • The coolant temperature gauge shows too high or too low a value
    • The tachometer shows a fault or does not work
    • The trip computer does not work or shows a wrong fuel consumption

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
