ECM-0001
VOLVO
ECM-0001 - Secondary speed. Signal faulty.
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsS70 (1997–2000), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (1997–2000), V70 (2000–2008)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has received an engine speed value from the needle lift sensor that is too high or changes unreasonably fast. The fault may lie in the sensor, in the connections or in the fuel supply. The code can cause starting problems or engine stalling, and it also affects fuel control, boost pressure and exhaust gas recirculation.
Possible causes
- If the code ECM-0000 is also stored, the engine has probably over-revved
- Faulty needle lift sensor
- Poor connection in the wiring to the needle lift sensor
- Fault in the fuel supply
What you can do
- 1Listen to the engine at idle. If it runs unevenly or stalls, note when this happens
- 2Check the connectors and wiring to the needle lift sensor for play, chafing and corrosion
- 3Check the fuel lines on the suction side for air leaks. Air bubbles in the clear fuel hose while the engine runs point to this
- 4Clear the fault code, road test the car and see whether it returns. If it does, have a workshop investigate the needle lift sensor and the fuel supply
- 5Work on pressure pipes and injectors should be left to a workshop. The fuel system is under very high pressure and can cause serious injury
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start
- The engine stalls
What the fault can affect3
- If the signal is too high, fuel control is temporarily switched off until the speed falls below the limit again
- If the signal is faulty, boost pressure is limited to the basic level, so the engine has less power
- If the signal is faulty, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is switched off
