VOLVO
ECM-0011 - Injection timing control. Injection too early
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsS70 (1997–2000), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (1997–2000), V70 (2000–2008)
What does this fault code mean?
Injection is happening too early compared with what the engine control module has requested. The module compares the required timing with the actual timing and sets the code if the difference becomes too large. The check is only made when the engine speed is within a suitable range, and the fault can cause poor acceleration and a hard-to-start engine.
Possible causes
- Faulty timing control valve
- Faulty needle lift sensor
- Incorrect pump setting
- Air in the fuel system
What you can do
- 1Check for air in the clear fuel hose on the fuel pump. Air bubbles can point to a leak in the fuel line on the suction side
- 2With a diagnostic tool, compare requested and actual timing in live data at idle. A large difference points to the fault
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the engine speed with the secondary speed in live data. They should agree
- 4Adjusting the injection pump and checking the timing control valve are workshop tasks
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the timing control valve, the needle lift sensor and the pump setting
Symptoms you may notice3
- Poor acceleration and a sluggish engine
- The engine is hard to start when cold
- The engine misfires
What the fault can affect2
- Only basic boost pressure is allowed
- No exhaust gas recirculation takes place
