What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has recorded a fault in the circuit to the malfunction indicator lamp, for example a short to earth or supply voltage or a break. The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and may not be present right now. The lamp may then be on or may not light at all.
Possible causes
- The signal wire is shorted to earth
- Break in the signal wire
- Contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Check that the connectors to the engine control module and the instrument cluster are fully engaged and clean
- 2Check the wires to the malfunction indicator lamp for chafing, play and corrosion
- 3Measure with a multimeter that the signal wire has no break and is not shorted to earth or supply voltage
- 4Check whether the malfunction indicator lamp lights when the ignition is switched on. It should light as a check at start-up
- 5Clear the fault code and road test the car. If it returns, have a workshop investigate the circuit and check the instrument cluster
