What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module compares the speed calculated from the crankshaft pulse sensor with the speed calculated from the camshaft sensor. If the two do not agree, the code is set. The fault shows up as the engine starting unreliably or stalling, which can happen while the engine is running.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
    • Break in the signal wire
    • Faulty camshaft sensor
    • Faulty crankshaft pulse sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the connectors to the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft pulse sensor for contact resistance and oxidation. Clean them and make sure they are fully seated
    2. 2Measure with a multimeter that the signal wires to the sensors have no break
    3. 3Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or the fuse list
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the engine speed with the camshaft speed in live data with the engine at idle. The values should agree
    5. 5Clear the fault code and road test the car. If it returns, have a workshop investigate the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft pulse sensor

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The engine does not start or starts unreliably
    • The engine may stall intermittently

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
