System
Engine Control Module (ECM)

Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has recorded a fault in the control signal to the electric cooling fan at full speed, for example a signal that is too low or a break. The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and may not be present right now. The fan may then run when it should not, or not run at full speed when it is needed.
Possible causes
- The signal is shorted to earth
- Break in the signal wire
- Break in the supply wire to the cooling fan relay
- Contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuse for the electric cooling fan is intact. Its location is in the owner's manual or the fuse list
- 2Check the connectors to the cooling fan relay and the engine control module for poor contact and oxidation
- 3Check the wires to the fan for chafing and pinch damage
- 4Measure with a multimeter that the signal wire has no break and is not shorted to earth
- 5Clear the fault code and road test the car. If it returns, have a workshop investigate the circuit and the cooling fan relay
Symptoms you may notice2
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time, even with the ignition off
- The electric cooling fan does not run at full speed
