ECM-0020
VOLVO
ECM-0020 - Injection timing valve. Signal too low. Intermittent fault.
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsS70 (1997–2000), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (1997–2000), V70 (2000–2008)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has received too low a signal from the injection timing valve. The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and may not be present right now. While the code is active, boost pressure is limited to the basic level, and the engine may feel sluggish with poor acceleration.
Possible causes
- The signal wire is shorted to earth
- Break in the signal or supply wire
- Contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Check the wires and connectors to the timing valve for play, chafing and corrosion
- 2Check the connectors on the timing valve and the engine control module for poor contact
- 3Check that the fuse for the timing valve is intact. Its location is in the owner's manual or the fuse list
- 4Because the fault is intermittent, note when the engine feels sluggish, and whether this happens at certain speeds or loads
- 5Clear the fault code and road test the car. If it returns, have a workshop investigate the timing valve and its circuit
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor acceleration and a sluggish engine
What the fault can affect1
- Only basic boost pressure is allowed
