VOLVO
ECM-0021 - Fuel cut-off valve. Signal fault at start. Intermittent fault.
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsS70 (1997–2000), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (1997–2000), V70 (2000–2008)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has recorded a fault in the fuel cut-off valve. The valve is tested at regular intervals, and a test is also made at start-up if the valve was previously judged faulty. If the valve fails the test, the code is set, and the test is then repeated at every start until the valve works again. The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes.
Possible causes
- The signal wire is shorted to earth
- Break in the signal or supply wire
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Faulty fuel cut-off valve
- The signal wire is shorted to battery voltage
What you can do
- 1Check the wires and connectors to the fuel cut-off valve for play, chafing and corrosion
- 2Measure with a multimeter that the signal wire is not shorted to earth or battery voltage and has no break
- 3Note whether the engine stalls or fails to start, and when this happens, so that a workshop can reproduce the fault
- 4Clear the fault code and road test the car. If it returns, have a workshop check the fuel cut-off valve
- 5The fuel system is under pressure, so work on the valve and fuel lines is left to the workshop
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine stalls
- The engine does not start
- Poor acceleration and a sluggish engine
What the fault can affect1
- Only basic boost pressure is allowed
