Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has an internal fault in its CAN communication circuits, the part that talks to the other modules in the car. The fault is intermittent, and the module has recorded it on an earlier occasion but has since found that it is no longer present. It can mean that the engine speed is not shown in the instrument cluster and that the car drives worse.
Possible causes
- Internal fault in the engine control module's CAN communication circuits
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and road test the car. If it does not return, the fault is not active at the moment
- 2If it returns, note whether the rev counter is missing or the car feels uneven, and under which conditions
- 3Check that the fuses for the engine control module are intact and that its supply is stable
- 4Check that the connectors to the engine control module are fully engaged and clean
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop investigate the engine control module and the CAN communication
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine speed is not shown in the instrument cluster
- Reduced drivability
- Harsh gear changes on cars with an automatic gearbox
