ECM-0039
VOLVO
ECM-0039 - Turbocharger (TC) control system. Flow too low
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsS70 (1997–2000), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (1997–2000), V70 (2000–2008)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module compares the desired and actual boost pressure from the turbocharger. If the difference becomes too large, the fault is stored, which usually means the turbo is delivering too little pressure. Common causes are air leakage in the intake, a blocked catalytic converter or exhaust system, and a defective turbocharger.
Possible causes
- Air leakage in the intake system
- Blocked catalytic converter or exhaust system
- Defective turbocharger
What you can do
- 1Check that the hoses to the turbocharger control valve and the hose between the boost pressure sensor and the intake manifold are secure, not leaking and not blocked
- 2Check the intake system for leaks, for example at hose connections and at the air filter housing
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the turbocharger control valve and listen for a click from the valve
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the desired and actual boost pressure in live data during a test drive and see whether they follow each other
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the boost pressure and check the turbocharger and the catalytic converter
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor acceleration, the engine feels sluggish
What the fault can affect1
- Boost pressure is limited to a basic value
