What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered a faulty reading from the mass air flow sensor. The cause may be poor contact, an air leak at the intake manifold or hoses, or wiring faults to the sensor. Sometimes the sensor itself is damaged.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation at the connections
- Air leak at the intake manifold or a hose
- Break or short to ground in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Break or short in the sensor's ground or power supply
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the mass air flow sensor connector for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Check the intake manifold, hoses and hose connections at the sensor for air leaks
- 3Check that the fuse for the sensor circuit is intact
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no break and no short to ground or supply voltage, moving the wiring as you measure
- 5If the fault returns although leaks and connectors are sound, have a workshop replace the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice3
- Check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- Car has poor performance or lacks power
- Warning symbol and text message in the display
What the fault can affect2
- A calculated air mass is used
- Engine torque is limited
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
