What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named after the mass air flow sensor, the signal that is too low comes from the intake air temperature sensor built into it. The engine control module stores the code when that signal is too low or does not follow the sensor's normal behaviour. The cause is most often poor contact, or a break or short to ground in the wiring.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, looseness or oxidation in the connections
- Break in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged intake air temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the mass air flow sensor connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no break and no short to ground
- 3Erase the fault code and test drive the car; if it returns with sound wiring, have a workshop replace the intake air temperature sensor inside the MAF sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
