What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered a coolant temperature signal that is too low. It compares the reading with an engine temperature it works out in theory at start-up. The cause is most often a break or a short to ground in the signal wire, but poor contact or a damaged sensor can also cause it.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Break in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Incorrect reference voltage
- Damaged control module
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the connectors to the control module and the coolant sensor for breaks, contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire does not break and has no short to ground when you move the wiring
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine temperature in live data when the engine is cold and compare it with the surrounding temperature
- 4If the wiring is sound, have a workshop replace the coolant temperature sensor or check the control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
