What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered a coolant temperature signal that is too high. The cause is most often a signal wire touching supply voltage, but a damaged sensor or control module, an extremely low engine temperature, or an incorrect reference voltage can also cause it.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Very low engine coolant temperature
- Incorrect reference voltage
- Damaged control module
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, unplug the coolant sensor connector and check the contacts for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2With the ignition on and the connector unplugged, use a multimeter on the signal wire; voltage there indicates a short to supply voltage
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine temperature in live data and see whether the value matches how cold or warm the engine is
- 4If the wire is sound and the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor and the control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
