What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module has found that the voltage from the rear lambda sensor on bank 1 is higher or lower than expected. The rear sensor sits after the catalytic converter and is used to check that the converter is cleaning the exhaust properly. The fault may come from an open or shorted signal wire, or from a damaged sensor.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit or short to ground in the signal wire
    • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
    • Damaged rear lambda sensor, bank 1

    What you can do

    1. 1Read, clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the connector at the rear lambda sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion
    3. 3Follow the cable from the rear sensor and look for chafing, pinched sections and loose clips
    4. 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no connection to ground (the body)
    5. 5With a diagnostic tool, watch the rear sensor value during a test drive. A value that never changes suggests a signal fault
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the wiring and decide whether the sensor needs replacing

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
