What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has detected that the signal from the fuel temperature sensor is too low and treats this as a fault. The fault is checked only while the engine runs, so the lamp may take a while to go out after a repair. The sensor measures fuel temperature, and a wrong signal gives the control module incorrect data. Causes are poor contact, an open circuit or short to ground in the signal wire, or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged fuel temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connectors at the fuel temperature sensor and at the control module are fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 3Follow the signal wire from the sensor and look for chafing, pinched sections and loose clips
- 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no connection to ground (the body)
- 5With a diagnostic tool, read the fuel temperature live with the engine running. An unrealistically low reading points to the sensor or wiring
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the sensor needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
