What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module has found the fuel temperature sensor signal to be too high and treats this as a fault. The fault is checked only while the engine runs, so the lamp may take a while to go out after a repair. The sensor measures fuel temperature, and a wrong signal gives the control module incorrect data. The cause is either a signal wire that has come into contact with supply voltage or a damaged sensor.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
    • Damaged fuel temperature sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the connector at the fuel temperature sensor is fully engaged and free from corrosion
    3. 3Follow the signal wire from the sensor and look for chafing, pinched sections and places where it may touch another wire
    4. 4With the ignition on and the sensor connector unplugged, use a multimeter to see whether the signal wire picks up voltage
    5. 5With a diagnostic tool, check that fuel temperature follows engine warm-up in live data. A value stuck high points to the sensor or wiring
    6. 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the sensor needs replacing

    Symptoms you may notice1
