ECM-0225 - Throttle position sensor. Faulty signal
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module compares throttle position sensor circuit 2 with circuit 1 and logs a fault when the circuit 2 signal is too high or too low. The fault affects how the control module reads throttle position, which can in turn limit engine power and cruise control. Causes are contact problems, an open or shorted signal wire, or a defective sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the circuit 2 signal wire, or short to ground or supply voltage
- Defective throttle position sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector at the throttle position sensor is fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 3Follow the circuit 2 signal wire and look for breaks, chafing and pinched sections
- 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no connection to ground (the body)
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, watch in live data whether both throttle position sensor values change smoothly as the accelerator is pressed slowly from released to fully down
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensor and decide whether it should be replaced
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
- Reduced performance
- Cruise control not working at all
- High fuel consumption
What the fault can affect3
- No combustion in lean mode
- Cruise control is switched off
- Engine power is limited
