What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named position sensor for intake air flow, it concerns the signal from the EGR valve position sensor. The engine control module monitors the EGR valve's function and logs a fault when the signal is incorrect or unreasonable. The fault is intermittent, so the signal comes and goes. The causes are loose or poorly contacting connections, or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Loose connection
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and road test. If it does not return straight away, the fault may be intermittent
- 2Check that the connectors to the EGR valve position sensor are fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 3Follow the cable from the EGR valve and look for chafing, pinched sections and loose clips, especially where it moves
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the EGR valve position value in live data with the engine running and see whether it jumps erratically
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the EGR valve and decide whether it should be replaced
Symptoms you may notice2
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
