Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) adjusts ignition timing with self-learning functions that compensate for deviations from normal values. Once these adjustments reach the end of their range, the module treats it as a fault in the impulse sensor. The fault is checked while driving, and the cause may be poor contact, a damaged impulse sensor or a damaged flywheel.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections to the impulse sensor
- Damaged impulse sensor
- Damaged flywheel
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2Check the impulse sensor connector, clean it if it is oxidised and make sure it is seated properly
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the crankshaft speed signal in live data and check that the value follows engine speed evenly during a road test
- 4Road-test the car after the work, since the fault is only checked while driving
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the impulse sensor and the flywheel
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
