What does this fault code mean?
The engine module returns a checksum every time a CAN message arrives from the brake module (BCM). If the checksum does not match the one in the brake module, or if the two modules cannot communicate over CAN, the fault is set. The driver usually notices nothing, but the fault can mean that the software in the engine module does not match the brake module.
Possible causes
- Interference on the CAN network
- Fault on the CAN network, which a workshop can check
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
- Wrong software loaded into the engine module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Has any control module been replaced or reprogrammed recently? That can cause a checksum mismatch between the engine module and the brake module
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, check whether there are fault codes in the brake control module (BCM) at the same time, as they may show where the fault starts
- 4The fault involves the brake control module, which is a safety function: have a workshop check the CAN communication and the software and correct the fault there, even if you notice nothing
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
