What does this fault code mean?

The control module compares the sensor pulses with the expected pole count of the magnetic wheel. If the count differs by at least one pole, or the top dead centre reference position is missing, the fault is set. A damaged flywheel or ring gear can also cause it. It is checked while the engine runs, and the engine will not start.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
    • Open circuit or short circuit in the wires to the sensor
    • Incorrectly fitted engine speed (RPM) sensor
    • Damaged engine speed (RPM) sensor or damaged magnetic wheel
    • Damaged flywheel or ring gear

    What you can do

    1. 1Switch off the ignition and check that the sensor is correctly fitted and is not damaged or dirty
    2. 2Check the sensor connector and the control module connector for contact resistance and oxidation. Clean the connector if it is oxidised
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the sensor have no open circuit and no short to ground or voltage
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine speed in live data with the engine idling and see whether the value jumps irregularly
    5. 5If the wiring is intact, the sensor, the magnetic wheel or the flywheel may be damaged. Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check them

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The engine cranks but does not start
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
