What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the camshaft sensor signal and treats it as faulty if it does not pulse as it should or deviates abnormally. The fault can be set both at start and while driving, and the engine may then fail to start. The causes are contact resistance in the connections, open or short circuits in the wiring, or a damaged camshaft sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the supply or ground wire, or ground wire shorted to voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire, or signal wire shorted to ground or voltage
- Defective or damaged camshaft position (CMP) sensor
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2Switch off the ignition and check the camshaft sensor and control module connectors for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Look for chafed wires or pinched areas in the camshaft sensor wiring, especially where it runs close to the engine
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the camshaft sensor have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground or voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the camshaft signal with the crankshaft signal in live data during a start attempt
- 6If the wiring is intact, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the camshaft sensor and replace it if needed
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
What the fault can affect1
- Fuel cut-off may not take place
