What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the camshaft sensor signal with a calculated value. When the two do not agree at engine speeds above a certain level, the control module interprets this as a fault. The causes may be contact resistance, wiring faults, an incorrectly fitted or damaged camshaft sensor, or a damaged control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit or short circuit in the wiring
- Incorrectly fitted camshaft position sensor
- Damaged camshaft position (CMP) sensor
- Damaged engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the camshaft sensor is correctly seated and not damaged or dirty. Clean it if needed
- 2Switch off the ignition and check the camshaft sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the camshaft sensor have no open circuit and no short to ground or voltage
- 4Road-test the car after the work, since the fault can only be set while the engine runs above a certain speed
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the camshaft sensor and the control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start, or cranks without starting
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
