What does this fault code mean?
The control module sees a spark time that is too short, or too little current, in the coil for cylinder 1, and sets the fault while driving. A weak spark can cause misfires. The cause may be an open or grounded primary lead to the coil, a damaged ignition coil, or a damaged pulley on the crankshaft.
Possible causes
- Open circuit on the ignition coil primary lead
- Short to ground on the ignition coil primary lead
- Open circuit on the ignition coil secondary lead
- Damaged ignition coil
- Damaged pulley on the crankshaft
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2The ignition system works at high voltage, so do not touch the ignition coil or spark plug leads while the engine is running
- 3Switch off the ignition and disconnect the plug on the cylinder 1 coil. Check the plug for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Look along the coil wiring for chafing and breaks, and use a multimeter to check that the lead to the coil has no open circuit and is not grounded
- 5Look at the crankshaft pulley for damaged teeth or other damage, since a damaged pulley can cause this fault
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil and its power supply
