What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) registers a spark time that is too short for cylinder 3, or too little current in the coil, and the fault is checked while driving. The cause may be an open or grounded primary lead, a damaged ignition coil or a damaged pulley on the crankshaft.
Possible causes
- Open circuit on the ignition coil primary lead
- Short to ground on the ignition coil primary lead
- Damaged ignition coil
- Damaged pulley on the crankshaft
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2Switch off the ignition and unplug the connector to the coil for cylinder 3. Check the contacts for looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to confirm the primary lead to the coil for cylinder 3 has no open circuit and is not grounded
- 4Look at the crankshaft pulley for damaged teeth or other damage
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil and its supply from the main relay
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on
