What does this fault code mean?
The glow plugs are switched through a relay, and the control module monitors the control circuit between that relay and the module. When it detects a signal that is too low in this circuit, the fault is set. It is mainly noticed as hard starting when the engine is cold.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2Switch off the ignition and check the connectors to the glow plug relay for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the relay is not shorted to ground
- 4Look for chafed wires to the glow plug supply, especially where they run close to the body or a metal part
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the relay and the wiring to the glow plugs
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine is hard to start, especially when cold
- The engine cranks slowly
