What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the EGR valve with a PWM signal through an internal power stage and checks that it responds correctly. The fault is set if the signal is too high or too low, if the temperature is too high, or if the air flow does not match.
Possible causes
- Temperature in the EGR system too high
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Signal wire short-circuited to voltage
- Damaged EGR valve
- Damaged mass air flow sensor (MAF)
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault code, erase it and road-test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact. Their locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Switch off the ignition and check the connectors to the EGR valve and the mass air flow sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the EGR valve is not shorted to ground or voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the mass air flow value in live data with the engine running and check that it follows the engine speed
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the EGR valve and the mass air flow sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
