VOLVO
ECM-0418 - Invalid Data Received From Brake Control Module
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) and the brake control module (BCM) exchange messages over the CAN network. If the engine module receives an incorrect or invalid message from the brake module, the fault is set, and it can also be set when the battery has been discharged. The fault indicates that the immobiliser codes do not match between the two modules, and it is checked when the ignition is switched on.
Possible causes
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM), which a workshop needs to trace
What you can do
- 1Check that the battery is fully charged and that the fuses are intact. Their locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Has any control module been replaced, moved from another car or reprogrammed recently? If so, the immobiliser codes may no longer match
- 3Switch off the ignition and check the connectors in the CAN network for loose connections and contact resistance, and look for chafed wires
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) at the same time, as they can show whether communication between the modules is broken
- 5Because the fault involves the brake control module, which is a safety function, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check it and reprogram the codes if needed. This is a workshop task
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start or crank, and no clicking sound is heard at a start attempt
- The immobiliser warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
